Apex completed project

London Borough of Waltham Forest – Chase Lane Park Playground Refurbishment — Chingford, London

This playground refurbishment was completed at Chase Lane Park in Chingford for the London Borough of Waltham Forest. The project included the bus climbing frame, see-saw, spinner, mini climbing frame, slide and perimeter fencing. A particularly important part of the work was restoring the park’s much-loved bus climbing frame. The approximately 40-year-old structure had been due for removal, but local residents successfully petitioned for it to remain. It was therefore carefully refurbished and given a durable new finish, preserving an important part of the park for future generations.

Before work began

Original condition

The playground equipment had become faded, weathered and worn after years of outdoor exposure and frequent use. The 40-year-old bus climbing frame required particular attention to restore its appearance and help extend its serviceable life. The remaining equipment and perimeter fencing also needed preparation and recoating to provide a brighter, cleaner and more consistent appearance throughout the play area.

The Apex standard

Preparation

All surfaces were inspected and thoroughly cleaned before painting. Loose and poorly bonded coatings were removed, worn areas were sanded back and the remaining surfaces were abraded to create a suitable key. Dust and contamination were removed before application, with particular attention given to edges, joints and high-contact areas. The surrounding park was carefully protected throughout the work.

Completed finish

The result

The completed refurbishment transformed the appearance of the play area and gave the equipment and perimeter fencing a bright, clean and durable new finish. Most importantly, the much-loved 40-year-old bus climbing frame was successfully preserved rather than removed. Following the residents’ petition, it was restored to look as good as the day it was made and made ready to serve the local community for many more years—hopefully another 40. Please note that the surface shown in these photographs is not the finished playground floor. A further layer of black wet-pour rubber safety surfacing will be installed around the equipment, providing a durable, shock-absorbing finish suitable for children’s outdoor play areas.
