Teignbridge Propellers – Industrial Extraction Unit Refurbishment — Torquay, Devon
I was responsible for completing the full preparation and protective recoating of a large industrial extraction unit at Teignbridge Propellers in Torquay, Devon.
The extraction system is a substantial piece of external industrial equipment consisting of a large filter tank, hopper sections, supporting steelwork, access platforms and associated components. Due to its exposed position and working environment, areas of the existing steelwork had begun to develop corrosion and required thorough preparation before the unit could be recoated.
I carefully inspected and prepared the complete extraction unit, paying particular attention to areas where rust had formed. The corrosion was mechanically ground back to remove loose rust and deteriorated material before a suitable rust-protection treatment was applied to the affected steel.
Once the preparation and corrosion-protection stages had been completed, I applied two full topcoats in RAL 9002 Grey White. The complete coating process restored the appearance of the extraction system while providing renewed protection to the tank, supporting structure and associated steel components.
The finished unit now has a clean, consistent industrial appearance, with the RAL 9002 Grey White coating providing a professional finish across the complete structure.

Before work began
Original condition
The large extraction and filtration unit was exposed to the demands of an industrial working environment and changing external weather conditions.
Areas of the steelwork showed signs of corrosion, particularly around exposed sections, joints, edges, fixings and other vulnerable areas where moisture can collect or the previous coating can begin to deteriorate.
If these areas had simply been painted over, the remaining corrosion could have continued developing underneath the new coating. This would have reduced the appearance, adhesion and protective performance of the finished system.
The complete unit therefore required detailed preparation, with all visible corrosion treated correctly before the new protective topcoats were applied.
The Apex standard
Preparation
I thoroughly inspected and prepared the complete industrial extraction unit before applying any new coating.
All accessible areas of corrosion were mechanically ground back to remove loose rust, deteriorated coating material and poorly bonded surface contamination. I paid particular attention to vulnerable edges, joints, fixings, welded areas and sections where corrosion had begun to develop.
The surrounding coating was abraded and feathered where required to create a smoother transition between the prepared areas and the remaining sound surface.
After completing the mechanical preparation, I cleaned the affected areas and applied a suitable rust-protection treatment to help control the remaining corrosion and provide additional protection beneath the new coating system.
I checked the unit again before topcoating to ensure that the surfaces were properly prepared and ready to receive the specified finish.
Completed finish
The result
The completed refurbishment significantly improved both the appearance and protection of the large industrial extraction unit.
I ground the affected areas of corrosion back, prepared the surrounding surfaces and applied rust protection before finishing the complete unit with two topcoats in RAL 9002 Grey White.
The new coating created a clean and consistent finish across the large extraction tank, hopper sections, framework and associated steel components. It also provided a renewed protective barrier against the demanding industrial environment and continued external exposure.
The extraction unit was left looking professionally maintained and substantially improved, with a durable industrial finish that complemented the surrounding equipment and manufacturing facility.
