9 Roller Shutter Refurbishment & Professional Spray Coating — Leeds, West Yorkshire

Apex Specialist Spray Coatings Ltd completed the refurbishment of nine industrial roller shutters at a commercial property in Leeds, West Yorkshire. The existing shutters required extensive preparation before they could be professionally recoated, with areas of the previous finish showing deterioration and damage. Rather than simply spraying over the existing coating, each shutter was carefully assessed and prepared according to its condition. The work included extensive sanding, feathering damaged areas and stripping sections back to the bare substrate where the existing coating was no longer suitable to receive a new finish. Following preparation and thorough cleaning, all nine shutters were professionally spray finished in RAL 9005 – Jet Black using a durable polyurethane coating system. The objective was to restore the existing shutters and achieve a smart, uniform and modern appearance while providing a hard-wearing protective finish suitable for a commercial and industrial environment.

Before work began

Original condition

The nine existing roller shutters required considerable preparation before a new coating system could be applied. The previous finish had deteriorated in areas, with damaged and uneven sections that would have remained visible and potentially affected adhesion if they had simply been coated over. Some areas required more extensive preparation than others. Where the existing coating remained suitable, it could be carefully prepared and feathered; however, sections with more significant deterioration required stripping back to the bare substrate. The varying condition across the shutters meant the preparation process needed to be approached carefully rather than treating every area in exactly the same way. Creating a clean, sound and stable substrate was essential before the polyurethane finishing system was applied.

The Apex standard

Preparation

Extensive preparation was undertaken across all nine roller shutters. Existing surfaces were thoroughly sanded to remove imperfections, provide a suitable key and create a sound foundation for the new coating system. Damaged and deteriorated coating edges were carefully feathered to create smooth transitions and prevent hard edges from showing through the finished surface. Where the existing coating had deteriorated beyond a suitable condition for recoating, affected sections were stripped back to the bare substrate and prepared accordingly. Once the mechanical preparation was completed, the shutters were thoroughly cleaned down to remove sanding residue, dust and surface contamination. Surrounding areas were then carefully protected as required before spray application. This detailed preparation was fundamental to the project. Rather than attempting to hide existing defects beneath a new coat of paint, the objective was to rectify and prepare them beforehand, providing the polyurethane coating with the best possible foundation for adhesion, appearance and long-term performance.

Completed finish

The result

Following extensive preparation and professional spray application, all nine roller shutters were completely transformed with a sleek RAL 9005 – Jet Black polyurethane finish. The previously deteriorated and damaged areas were carefully prepared before coating, including sanding, feathering and stripping sections back to bare substrate where required. This attention to preparation allowed the final coating to achieve a much cleaner, smoother and more consistent appearance across the complete set of shutters. The deep Jet Black finish provides the property with a smart, modern and professional appearance while the polyurethane coating system provides a durable protective surface suitable for the demands of a commercial and industrial environment. Refurbishing the existing roller shutters also provided an effective alternative to unnecessary replacement. Where shutters remain mechanically serviceable, professional preparation and spray coating can dramatically improve their appearance while extending the useful life of the existing assets. The completed Leeds project demonstrates the standard Apex Specialist Spray Coatings Ltd applies to roller shutter refurbishment: defects are properly prepared rather than simply covered over, surfaces are thoroughly cleaned, and the final coating is professionally spray applied to achieve a high-quality, long-lasting finish. Nine roller shutters refurbished. One consistent RAL 9005 – Jet Black finish. Another commercial transformation completed.
