Apex completed project

Wimbledon Quarter Retractable Roof Cladding Refurbishment

I was contracted to complete high-level spraying works within the main hall of Wimbledon Quarter in London SW19. The project involved refurbishing the long cladding panels positioned underneath and around the building’s retractable roof. With sections extending more than 20 metres above floor level, safe access and careful control of the working area were essential. As an IPAF-registered operative, I used a specialist spider lift to reach the difficult areas and complete the work safely and efficiently. The project was delivered in preparation for the increased number of visitors expected in Wimbledon during the Wimbledon Championships.

Before work began

Original condition

The existing cladding panels around the retractable roof had an aged and inconsistent appearance and required preparation before a new coating could be applied. The considerable height, long panel runs and restricted access made this a technically demanding refurbishment project. Because I was working inside the main public hall, all surrounding surfaces and equipment required thorough protection from sanding residue and airborne spray.

The Apex standard

Preparation

I inspected and thoroughly sanded the cladding panels to remove surface imperfections, create a suitable key and promote strong coating adhesion. I then carefully taped, masked and protected all surrounding areas with plastic sheeting. Working at heights exceeding 20 metres, I used a specialist spider lift to safely access the cladding beneath and around the retractable roof. Detailed preparation and masking enabled me to achieve clean edges while protecting the surrounding structure throughout the spraying process.

Completed finish

The result

The completed cladding now has a clean, bright and consistent white finish that complements the modern interior of Wimbledon Quarter. Despite the challenging access, extremely long panel runs and working heights of more than 20 metres, I successfully completed the spraying works using a specialist spider lift. Shortly after I finished, the retractable roof was opened to reveal the newly refinished cladding around the main hall. The area was refreshed and ready to welcome the crowds visiting Wimbledon during the Championships.
